Meet Your Neighbour
| |
This week I would you to introduce you all to Drina Latrace. Drina was born in Fernie BC. She was the last baby born in the old hospital and her brother was the first baby born in the new hospital! How is that for an odd little quip?
She started out in a logging camp called Newgate and then moved around from Lumby, Coldstream, Winfield to Armstrong as her dad's work moved. By her early teens she was attending school in Lacombe AB while her family resided in Swan Lake BC, just outside Vernon. She managed to save enough money to travel back to visit [$5 gas each way] and arrived to find no family in the home! Turns out her family had moved on to Terrace. Drina had moved up to Terrace upon graduation from high school. Her first job was at the Lake Else Hotel where she was employed for 3 months. The best part of that job? She met her future husband Hugh! They had 2 dates and were engaged. Her family was not thrilled and talked them out of an August wedding and opting for a November wedding. After a honeymoon in Pr. Rupert, Drina was then employed with the telephone company where she worked for 37 years.
Drina had moved out to Scotch Creek and decided to take up quilting. She would often go south for the winters to Arizona and learned so much from the ladies there. At one of her first meetings the topic was using your stash. Drina had no idea what a "stash" was and asked for help. Well, being helpful quilters, she went home at the end of the winter with $2500 worth of fabric. Hence a love of fabric and creating was born! Having recently moved she discovered that she has 436 meters of Christmas fabric alone!!!!!
Drina loves the entire process of quilting, from choosing the fabrics, cutting and arranging the fabrics and blocks to the piecing and quilting. She even enjoys the binding!
Drina has all the energy you can imagine, all the community caring and all the passion that quilting can create! I want to thank Drina so much for all the fun, laughter and amazing support you have shown for our shop over the years. You are a woman to be reckoned with!
