Happy New Year

A bit of a late start on the newsletter this time. I was off sick with the flu but am getting back to myself now.
All of us at the Shelf want to wish you a happy and healthy 2023. I think this is the year for us to reconnect with others in our quilting community. Be kind, be fun and most of all reach out to others. You never know who you will meet and what a difference you can make in someone's life.
Let's make 2023 the best ever!

Weekly Quilting Tip

This week's quilting tip comes from Nancy's Notions. If you have never tried applique or are a bit hesitant give this a read to maybe answer some of your questions and inspire you!
"What is Machine Applique? Is it hard to do? Is it easy? The answer to that one is yes! It’s very easy and you can do it!
The quilt pictured above features an appliqued cat. It appears to be a difficult quilt but is actually very easy! In fact, a 12 year old girl made it. (Pattern is Meow or Never by Moda. Quilter, Maleah Cooper)
Machine applique is great for beginners and not-really-beginners. It is easier than it sounds and opens up a new world of possibilities in the quilting world. Applique is the process of attaching fabric (usually in the shape of something cute) to the top of your quilt block or quilt top. There are several different methods for attaching the applique but let’s focus on machine applique."

Solare is in the building!

The Solare kits are ready to go!! From Northcott, the quilt finishes at 99" x 99" and is all done in Banyan Batiks.
I am currently working on the shop sample and am ready for Month 5. Each month you learn a new technique. Month 5 is working with templates. Because it is batiks I am using Microtex needles and I am using my Acorn Pressing Solution for perfect crisp seams and having great results. Next week I will show you all my efforts.
The quilt is meant to be a BOM but we are instead offering it as a whole kit. Ask us about the layaway if you would like to pay for it in installments. The only notion I would say is an absolute necessity is the 3 1/2" square. We will have them by the end of the week at the latest.
You can find the Solare kits in the shop and online at https://fabricshelf.rainadmin.com/shop/Kits/p/SOLARE---99-x-99-x67261523.htm

Free Pattern - Helix

In my scrolling and snooping around I have come across a gorgeous pattern from Robert Kaufman called Helix.
In the photo you can see it done in a line called Fusions. Any strip roll will work, batiks or regular. I am thinking even flannels would be a good choice. The quilt finishes at 59" x 67" so a great lap size.
This one might even work well as a stash buster! Oh my but the creative juices are going now! Give this one a try and send photos of it in to us. I will post them to give people ideas.
