Meet Your Neighbour
| |
This week I would like you to meet Marion Jackson, a long time resident of Kamloops who has the ability to just make you feel so warm and fuzzy when you meet her. She is always friendly, always positive and always with a smile! Who doesn't want to be with someone like that?
Marion was born in Kamloops and was the middle child. She lived in Knutsford until the age of 3 when she moved out to Black Pines with her family. There is actually a road up in Knutsford called "Jackson Road" named for her family! Marion's dad was a rancher with over 100 head of cattle so the family was a busy one. At the time Marion lived in black Pines there was a one room school that she attended. The school is still there but is now a private residence. When the school closed she then attended school in Vinsulla until Grade 8. Well this meant she had to get across the river to Vinsulla. In the warmer months she went by boat and in the winter the kids would all head out and walk across on the ice! I can't imagine that happening in today's world!
Next Marion attended Kamloops High but lived too far to commute every day, so she stayed in dorms at the school. Upon completion of High School she moved back to the farm to help out. Her dad decided to sell the farm and move back into town. Marion followed and began taking a Business Course, which led to working at a Finance Company for 9 years and then to the Irving Clinic for several more years.
Marion began quilting with Mary Dunstan at Macrame Hut downtown Kamloops many years ago. Marion really doesn't have a favourite part of quilting ...... she loves it all. Whether it is choosing fabric, piecing, embroidery or the quilting and the binding, Marion just completely enjoys it all!
Marion we take our hats off to you for your enthusiasm for quilting and your passion to always try new quilting ideas! Thank you Marion, for being you!

Maureen Connolly
Maureen Connelly was in to long arm quilt her gorgeous little quilt. She really was not overly in love with this one, but after quilting it she is thinking this one is pretty good! It is always a surprise how the quilting can change the whole look and feel of the quilt.
Even more exciting on this is that this was Maureen's first time trying free motion quilting. Up until now she has used pantos. Maureen used this quilt to try out several different designs to see what she liked and what she didn't.
Thank you, Maureen, for coming in to share your day with us and encourage everyone to try something new!

Trunk Show
A trunk show? At our shop? Yes! Guess who the presenters are? YOU!! Let's have a Sunday afternoon , July 14th, showing our very first quilt! I think this would be so much fun to see what everyone made for the their first project! If you don't still have your very first one, that is okay. Just bring the earliest one you can find. No cost, just fun with some door prizes and snacks.
Just a bit of a heads up.....I have mine still after all these years, made from some stunning Walmart cotton. Looks like one of the grandkids has spilled some juice on one edge. I actually called this quilt "Missing Points" and I am sure you can guess why!
Save the date July 14th from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Give us a call at 250-376-7630 to reserve your seat!

Our May Stash Class had to be cancelled due to Heather getting sick. She was so ill she lost 15 lbs!!! It is okay, those 15 lbs are sitting in the fridge waiting to attach themselves to her thighs! LOL
Anyway to get back on topic, Stash class has been rescheduled for Wednesday June 26th from 10 - 4. Cost of the class is $25. I don't have all the binding on but I am hoping you get a pretty good idea from the photo.

Walk in the Park
We have a party coming to the shop on June 29 from 10 am to 5 pm! Joan Frazier is spear-heading this endeavor with her Cotton Pickers Guild.
Earlier in the year Joan had members of her guild work on a mystery quilt called "Walk in the Park" with people choosing their own colors with no idea what it would be at the end. Now the quilts are done and ready to be shown! How fun is that? I can't wait to see how different every one of the quilts is using the same pattern.
Being a bit of a Show and Tell it is open for everyone to come and see and be inspired! I will have some fun surprises during the day with snacks, give aways and more!
Save the date of June 29th here at the shop to take a Walk in the Park where it is air conditioned and have loads of fun!

Mary Jane Ried
Mary Jane Reid was in to long arm quilt her gorgeous quilt she made for her friend Helen. She started with a panel and went from there. I just love the Ribbon border in purples. It adds movement and draws the eye from the center of the quilt to the outside.
Beautiful work, Mary Jane and want to thank you for sharing with us and giving us a new idea for panels.

Denim and Leather BOM
A new Block of the Month program has started at the shelf! We just love the rich blues and deep browns in this project. One of the most appealing aspects of this quilt is that it is suitable for young, older, male, female, weddings, graduations and more. Not a lot of quilts tick that many boxes, but this one does it all!
Price of the program is a $25 commitment fee and then $39 per month for 7 months. You can purchase the entire kit for $279 and waive the commitment fee if that works better for you. The quilt is on display at the front of the shop so come on by and take a look!
You can give us a call at 250-376-7630 or check it out on line at http://www.fabricshelf.ca
