Alaska 2022

Alaska may 2022 projects

Yes we are going to Alaska in 2022 on a quilting cruise. How exciting is that? Anne Hall and I are hosting this fabulous trip and garauntee some good times, quilting, good food and spectacular scenery!

This is of course all dependant on the Covid situation, as we take your safety is of first concern for us. All precautions will be taken to have fun, enjoyable but safe vacation. We have a limit of 20 students in order to keep distances.Only 6 spots left so give a call soon!!!

The project offered is gorgeous! Called "Mermaids Tale" you can make this one as a 68" x 68" or extend it to a 99" x 99" queen quilt. You also have the option of doing the Poinsettia project which you will probably be able to finish the top on the cruise! That would be cool! Next you also can choose to do a UFO! You will need it to be a Quiltworx or Be Colourful project, and Anne will help you get through the project!

This all sure makes it sound pretty darn exciting! You can find all the details at Anne Hall's website http://www.sewpeaceful.com

Celia Visscher

celia-visscher-vintage-quilt

Celia Visscher brought her quilt in for us to quilt. All the fabrics in this quilt are lovely Vintage Themed fabrics. Celia did a fantastic job of the piecing and the quilt was just so easy to work with!

I must be really anxious for spring to get here because I am just totally loving the spring coloured projects we get to see in here! Love love, and love some more your quilt Celia!

Thank you to Celia for letting us be a part of your quilting story!

Christine Loewen Quilt #1

christine-loewen-1

Christine Loewen brought 2 quilts in for us to quilt for her. This one was so beautiful with a simple design with soft denim blues, greys and Navy and even a titch of red thrown in for good measure!

Bill did the quilting on her quilt with a new design with swirls and maple leafs. You can see from the look on Christine's face, it turned out just perfect! Love the maple leaf representing Canada.

Out of time? Busy getting ready for gardening? Don't forget that we can quilt your quilt for you if you like.
We charge $.03 cents per square inch. Take the width, times it by the length and then times it by $.03 for what it would cost you.
Excellent results and a fast turnaround. Just bring your quilt in on a hangar in 3 separate pieces....top, batting and backing. Please ensure your batting is 2" bigger at least all the way around and the backing 6" bigger than the top all way around. No batting? We can provide that. No backing? We have lots to choose from.

Thank you to Christine for sharing with everyone your creativity and thank you to Bill for a great job of the long arm quilting!

Christine Loewen Quilt #2

christine-loewen-2

Here is the second quilt that Christine brought in for us to quilt. On this quilt Christine wanted something calming and somehow with a water look.

Bill took the project and just had so much fun with. He designed a wave pattern specifically for Christine's quilt. This was a first for Bill, and he nailed it! So proud of that  man of mine!

Christine was thrilled, Bill busted a button or 2 and everyone is happy! Just a perfect day at the Shelf!

Again thank you to Christine for sharing with us all and big hugs to Bill for becoming a long arm designer!

Donna Fluery

Donna Fluery was in to long arm quilt her gorgeous quiltthis week. Her project worked with many scraps from her stash and some new fabrics as well. Don't you just love the aqua blue solid background fabric?

Holy moley this one is a lot of piecing but the results are amazing! Her piecing was lovely and I really like the border treatment with the half square triangles.

Well done Donna and also to Bill who helped her with the computer quilting for perfect results. Thank you to you both for sharing with everyone.

Karen Cavanaugh

karen-cavanaugh

Karen Cavanaugh was in to long arm quilt her awesome earth tone quilt. Her fabrics of choice were batiks all in earth tones with the always lovely piano key border. What a great way to pull all the colours in the center of the quilt to the border!

This was the class for Karen to learn all the ins and outs from Bill on long arm quilting. She tried following the panto, free motion and ultimately decided on the computer programming. It is just so perfect every time with limitless choices in design.

Congratulations Karen on a beautiful quilt! Thank you so much for sharing all your creativity and talent with us!

Paulette Eccleston

paulette-eccleston-rainforest-front

Paulette Eccleston was in to long arm quilt this monster of a quilt. This is one of the biggest ones to come in the door. The quilt measured 115" long!!! Paulette looks so tiny next to it!

Her theme on this quilt was Rainforest so she very aptly chose to use the edge to edge design by computer called Raindrops. That was just so perfect Paulette!

Paulette, thank you so much for coming in and quilting this huge quilt with us! You can see another photo below of the same quilt, but the back of it. She added some of the tree blocks to make it big enough and it looks even more spectacular!

Sylvia Chow

sylvia-chow-9-patch-chain-2

Sylvia Chow brought in one of the prettiest quilts ever! Sylvia's mom passed away a bit ago. She made this quilt in memory of her mom with the colours and pattern reminiscent of the quilts she had growing up.

The Irish Chain pattern is just perfect for the vintage look she was looking to achieve in this one. The solid yellow  was spot on and a common colour used in years past for the borders and backgrounds.

Beautifully done, Sylvia and I just loved the pattern for the quilting design you chose. Very floral and feathery to keep that vintage look. Just gorgeous!

Thank you Sylvia and now I want to go home and sew!

Reversible Slouch Bag

The Slouch bag!

Who doesn't want a slouch bag? I have to admit iti it is probably not the very choice of mine for every day, but I can sure think of times I would love to have it! I know my daughter would just adore it! That is a test to see if she reads mama's newsletters....LOL
The bag is simple to make, doesn't require a lot of fabric or strange rulers and notions so a perfect project for a weekend!

Check out the instructions here   https://media.rainpos.com/5025/slouch_bag_instr.pdf

Orkney as well as Standen Lines of Morris Fabrics

abc-4

Inspired by the works of William Morris (24 March 1834 – 3 October 1896)  who was a British textile designer, poet, novelist, translator and socialist activist associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement.

There are very strict rules in the making of any fabrics, wallpaper, upholstery or any other items based on Morris' work. If you look up William Morris you will find the Orkney designs as well as the Standen lines that we carry now. I love the look of the fabric and loving a bit of history thrown in is just icing on the cake!

Check them out in the shop or online at http://www.fabricshelf.ca

Bisa Butler - Quilter Extrordinaire

modern-quilt-image

My brother , Mike Cackette, found this very interesting article on an amazing fabric artist and sent it to me. I wanted to share with you all this amazing talent!

Artist Bisa Butler treats quilting like painting to create incredible fabric portraits. Colorful swatches of prints and patterns offer a contemporary twist on historical representations of Black men, women, and children. In creating these massive pieces, she is helping to tell the stories of people who have been forgotten or completely overlooked.

To create her incredible quilt art, Butler layers fabrics and pieces every element together—down to a tiny glint on an eye. If this sounds like a meticulous process, it is. Some of her larger quilts, which measure over seven feet, can take her over 200 hours to complete. She finishes her work on a long-arm quilting machine.

Butler’s work sheds light on what is dimmed in the scope of history. “My community has been marginalized for hundreds of years,” she explains. “While we have been right beside our white counterparts experiencing and creating history, our contributions and perspectives have been ignored, unrecorded, and lost. It is only a few years ago that it was acknowledged that the White House was built by slaves. Right there in the seat of power of our country African Americans were creating and contributing while their names were lost to history.

“I am inviting a reimagining and a contemporary dialogue about age-old issues, still problematic in our culture, through the comforting, embracing medium of the quilt. I am expressing what I believe is the equal value of all humans.”
