Meet Your Neighbour

009-5

This week we would like you to meet Maggie Carter, quilter, mom, grandma, wife, friend and just one of favourite customers! Maggie is always with a smile, a giggle and the best positive attitude ever! No wonder we love her!

Maggie was born in New Westminster BC and grew up in Savona and Kamloops. She spent 30 years as a Dental Receptionist, mostly in Prince George. Now retired, she and her husband run a farm with Black Angus cattle.

Maggie took her first course in quilting in Prince George to try it out and see if it would be a good fit for her. Well guess what? It was a perfect fit! She has managed to fit her quilting in with her cross stitch and is pretty darn prolific at it! Most of her quilts are big ones and she has made several for family and friends.

Her favourite part of the quilting process is the piecing. Maggie loves to see how the project works as she puts the pieces together! She told me that her quilts will always be large. That is her favourite size to work on.

Being that Maggie has no intention of changing her life style any time soon we are sure to see lots of her!

Gee's Bend Quiltmakers

n005

The women of Gee’s Bend—a small, remote, black community in Alabama—have created hundreds of quilt masterpieces dating from the early twentieth century to the present. Resembling an inland island, Gee’s Bend is surrounded on three sides by the Alabama River.
The seven hundred or so inhabitants of this small, rural community are mostly descendants of slaves, and for generations they worked the fields belonging to the local Pettway plantation. Quiltmakers there have produced countless patchwork masterpieces beginning as far back as the mid-nineteenth century, with the oldest existing examples dating from the 1920s.
Enlivened by a visual imagination that extends the expressive boundaries of the quilt genre, these astounding creations constitute a crucial chapter in the history of African American art.

Diana Hewins

  diana-hewins-001

Diana Hewins was in to long arm quilt her gorgeous quilt. Now here is the really interesting part: this quilt is all made from the left overs from her Butterfly Sampler quilt she made for our shop.

Diana even pieced the backing and made it work! Some advice from Diane in regards to piecing your backing: "Square each of the pieces and sew carefully so the quilt will look even after you have done the quilting".

Thank you Diana for always inspiring us all!

Hints of Spring

hints-of-spring-free-pattern

Is this not a great quilt project? I think it may have been the name as well that caught my attention. "Hints of Spring" ..... forget the hints just bring on the Spring !!!!!

Anyway part of the appeal of this project is that it uses a large pictoral fabric. Use your imagination and make one up!

Quilt Show April 27/28th, 2019

  quilt show

Just getting the word out early for everyone. We are having our quilt show this year April 27/28th.

As always the quilt show will be right here in the Brock Shopping Center, in Kamloops, BC.

Our quilt show costs nothing to enter a quilt and everyone is welcome. If you can let us know how big your quilt is that is helpful for arrangement of the quilt racks.

We would love to see what you have been working on currently or in the past. The quilts shown are modern, antique, traditional and can be bed quilts, bags, clothing, runners and placemats or anything else that you have made from fabrics.

Entry to see the show is by donation to offset the costs and proceeds go to charity. I am cracking my whip, ladies, so you can get your quilts in!
