Meet Your Neighbour
| |
This week I would like everyone to meet Neila McKee, one of our most prolific quilters. She is also a dear friend of ours now for many years.
Neila was born in Kimberly BC and was raised there. After graduation from school in Kimberly she was off to college in California for a year before returning to attend UBC. Neila worked in the Kindergarten classroom but found it just wasn't a good fit for her. She then went to work for the school board working as a support worker. She then went back to school to become a Legal Assistant for the Family Maintenance Enforcement for BC. I am thinking this all was pretty darn stressful!Enter quilting as a great way to relax!
Neila saw a quilt in the window of Macrame Hut in the late 80's and decided to give it a try. She began taking courses at Macrame Hut with Lynn Berg, then Fabric House with Betty Oswell and anywhere else she could find courses. Her supplies to get started consisted of scissors, pencils and a 3" x 18" ruler. How far you have come Neila!
As time went on, Neila found herself volunteering at Katja's Quilt shoppe and it was there that she fell in love with the Thimbleberries line of fabric. She and Betty Oswell then began teaching a Thimbleberries club at Katja's shop. As Betty eventually moved on Jeanne Van Der Waal then stepped in to help Neila out. To this day country fabrics such as Kansas Troubles, Kim Deihl and others are her favourite fabrics.
When asked what her favourite part of quilting is she replied "It would have to be the choosing of the fabrics!". I totally agree Neila!
Interesting enough when asked what is on her bucket list for quilting she replied " Making a Queen size Wedding ring quilt". It is just too big size and finance wise to take on now, but...........you never know Neila, life can jump up and change everything for you!
When in our shop the next time take a peek at all the Kim Deihl samples on the wall. They are gorgeous. Neila is the quilter on most of them!

Carol's piecing is always so precise it makes the long arm quilting a treat! Having every seam line up makes the squaring up of the quilt so much easier! I am sad to say mine do not always end up as precise.....le sigh.....

Stripped and Buttoned Bag
This is a little bit embarrassing but I forgot to write the lady's name down that made the Stripped and Buttoned Bag. However I did get the photo and wanted to show everyone the project made up in bright spring colours. I also didn't realize that we had the bag turned and you don't get to see the pocket on the other side. It was lovely. Sheesh! Unknown lady only put the pocket on one side of the bag but she chose the best buttons ever....they are sparkly little flip flops! So darn cute! The pattern is available in our shop or on line at http://www.fabricshelf.ca
Thank you to the unknown lady and I do apologize profusely for this faux pas. Your bag is gorgeous!

Quilt Show April 27/28th, 2019
| |
Quilt Show this year is a go!! We were a bit iffy for a space but it is all good! So excited! April 27/28th. I will get the word out for volunteers as soon as I get to that. Thank you for your patience.
As always the quilt show will be right here in the Brock Shopping Center, in Kamloops, BC.
Our quilt show costs nothing to enter a quilt and everyone is welcome. If you can let us know how big your quilt is that is helpful for arrangement of the quilt racks. We do have a limit of 2 quilts per person, due to space restraints.
We would love to see what you have been working on currently or in the past. The quilts shown are modern, antique, traditional and can be bed quilts, bags, clothing, runners and placemats or anything else that you have made from fabrics.
The form for entering a quilt will be up on the web site by Tuesday at the latest. If you can download the form and fill it out to bring in with your quilt that would be very helpful. You will also be able to pick up forms at the till to take home and fill out. If you can bring the forms in attached to the quilt we will love you!!
Entry to see the show is by donation to offset the costs and proceeds go to charity. I am cracking my whip, ladies, so you can get your quilts in!
