Meet Your Neighbour

kathleen-alcock-meet-your-neighbour

This week meet Kathleen Alcock, a teacher, a quilter, a musician and one of the nicest people you could ever meet!

Kathleen was born in Vancouver. She was raised in Richmond on Gilbert Rd. just around the corner from my aunt and uncle! I couldn't believe it! She knew my cousins, went to the same school and knew the area well. Kathleen went to Errington Elementary and then to McNair High School. Upon graduation she worked at a book store for 12 years. She also taught swimming lessons in Mrs. Beattie's back yard swimming pool as a teenager.

Kathleen attended UBC achieving a degree in music. From that she carried on to get her degree in Education. The first 3 1/2 years after that she was on call for the Delta and Richmond school district. Her career then took her to Stewart for 2 1/2 years. That would have been a bit of culture shock!

The next community that called her name was the town of Chase where she taught English and Music courses for 9 years. From Chase she moved to Kamloops where she has taught at Valleyview Secondary since 1999. Next month she will have been teaching for 35 years!

In between all of this she met Joe on a dare. She lost the bet but gained a husband from those shenanigans and never looked back!

Kathleen taught herself to sew after watching her mom sew dresses and doll clothes. She had wanted to learn to quilt since she was 14, but the thought of using the cardboard templates just put her off. Around the year 2000 she wandered into Katja's quilt shop when it was up the hill across from Aberdeen Mall and her quilt journey began.

Kathleen came into our shop several years ago and was intrigued with the long arm. She has been using our long arm ever since and is a regular. She is very competent on the long arm and is a lover of the free hand quilting.

When asked what her favourite part of quilting is...she really doesn't have a favourite. In her words "It all starts with the fabric and just grows from there". We can wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment!

Thank you Kathleen for sharing with us a little bit of your story! I can't wait to get home and phone my aunt to let her know that one of my customers was one of her neighbours!
