This year we are again participating in collecting purses for women in need. Gently used or new purses with supplies you think would be appreciated. This program has proved to be very popular and fills a need not just for the product the purses contain, but is such an emotional lift!
Socks, mitts or gloves, makeup, perfume, kleenex, hygiene products, gift cards, masks, wallet or anything else that you think would be good.
Drop off at our shop any time during business hours until Dec. 14th
I have the poster in the window of our shop as well as at the till. If you have any questions please call Patti at the NSBIA 250-376-2411

The Story of the Cowichan Sweater

I am sure most of you have heard of the Cowichan Sweater but did you know the story behind it? I found this article and found is very interesting.
Years ago I knit several of these type of sweaters as they are perfect for the West Coast climate. I can remember knitting the raglan sleeves on Bill's sweaters and thinking....these have to be the biggest longest and heaviest sleeves ever! They worked and fit him perfectly so I was pretty happy.
Pour a cup of coffee and kick back to read the story: https://www.yammagazine.com/the-story-of-the-cowichan-sweaters/?fbclid=IwAR1v9vzqJcmKon8TaixpirD-SmsN19NkXG_9DdtbbSEICr1OKxcPD7k-_UU

Anna Swanson.

Anna Swanson had us quilt her jaw dropping amazing bed size quilt. This one done all in the blues is so effective with her use of different values of the colour.
You too can make a quilt using only one colour but do pay attention to the light, medium and dark tones so each part of your project will work with the pattern. If you really struggle with this, take a picture with your camera and make it black and white. That way you can tell the shades much easier.
Anna, you did a great job on this one and Lori Dewart's quilting was spot on! Thank you to both for sharing your talents and creativity with us all!

Elizabeth Biagioni

Elizabeth Biagioni brought her Winter quilt in for us to quilt for her. I have to say Elizabeth makes the best winter quilts ever! In fact, at the very first quilt show we did 15 years ago guess what Elizabeth was showing? Yep, it was a Winter quilt.
Bill did the quilting on this one and it turned out lovely with a design called Star Swirl. Add in the Glide thread and you know you will have perfect results.
Are you wanting to get some of your projects quilted? To get an estimate of what your quilt will cost to be quilted : length x width x .03cents. You can just bring your quilt in with batting and backing at least 4" larger all around or send an email to me at mailto:info@fabricshelf.ca
Also if you go to longarm service on our website you will find all sorts of interesting and useful information including how to prepare your backing! http://www.fabricshelf.ca

Drina Latrace

Drina Latrace brought her darling little girl quilt in for us to longarm quilt for her. The theme of the quilt is My Little Pony so you just know that one little girl is going to be very happy with this one.
Lori Dewart did the quilting on the quilt with a lovely simple floral design. The choice of pattern is happy and basic floral with Glide thread making it all work together so well.
Thank you to Drina for sharing another amazing project!

Sylvia Chow

Sylvia Chow was in to long arm quilt her gorgeous star quilt. This one is for her son and is so special with all the different elements. She included fabrics with sports, outdoors, medical interests and more!
I love to see how quilters make the project they are working on, uniquely there's. You are all so talented you need to give yourselves a pat on the back and a day off from doing any housework whatsoever!
Bill was the helper on this one and Sylvia had it done in 3 hours! Now to get the binding on and it is ready to go!
Thank you to Sylvia for sharing all your great ideas with everyone.

Donna Hartnell

Donna Hartnell brought 2 quilts in for us to longarm for her. I love the combination of the black, whites and bright green.Donna says she has done these patterns a few times and they always turn out so well.
Those little squares you see? Yes they are truly very tiny! Of course she isn't cutting each square individually but still! Donna you are amazing working with such small pieces and keeping everything straight and even. Have to say we do love that and it sure makes our job so much easier!
Lori Dewart did the quilting on both of the quilts and did a fabulous job of it. The pattern chosen locked down every seam which is so important, as that is the weakest part of any quilt.
Take a look at the quilts and enjoy! Thank you Donna for sharing your quilting journeuy with us!

Celtic Quilt

Barb Haines designed and made this quilt for friends Jim and Deb Garey! This one is a real show stopper with machine embroidery in each block.
Each of the 30 blocks is a different design pertaining to Jim and Deb's Irish ancestry. Again isn't it amazing how quilter's can make each project so unique to the recipient?
Barb, Jim and Deb were in the shop many times to choose fabrics, threads for the embroidery and general supplies.
The Glide thread works very well for embroidery. In fact, the distributor for Glide thread actually produced the thread originally for embroidery! We have a large supply of Glide thread for embroidery and for longarming https://fabricshelf.rainadmin.com/shop/Glide-Thread.htm

Leslie Ford

Our very own Leslie Ford did some training on the longarm with Lori Dewart helping. It is not often you encourage one staff member to be telling another staff member what to do, but in this case it worked and everyone is happy! LOL
Leslie found the time between work and husband and parents, and 2 cats to piece this beauty of a quilt. It was just a perfect one to learn the longarming on as it had lots of reference lines to use and was so lovely and even. It is so pretty with all the flowers and love the block pattern!
Great work from Leslie and from Lori and everyone is happy! We are fully booked for October, and not many spots left in November. December we are only 2 people booked in so room there. Give us a call at 250-376-7630 if you would like to book in and you too, can be just like Leslie!!

Sewing Machine Repair

A little bit of a change to the machine repair schedule.
Bill has rescheduled when he will visit his dad in Salmon Arm to Wednesdays. He will bring your machines out to meet up with Hector in Salmon Arm. there is no added cost for Bill to bring your machines over to Salmon Arm.
Hector then takes the machines back to Kelowna to service and you get your machine back the following Thursday.
Hoping this all makes sense to you. If you have any questions please give us a call at 250-376-7630 or you can email usinfo@fabricshelf.ca
***Please note that the price of the servicing is going up by $10 to offset Hector and Tammy's travel costs up from Kelowna and back. **** We have openings for machines to be serviced. Don't forget that Hector and Tammy service sergers as well.
If you can drop your machines off by end of day on Tuesday you can be assured your machine will get over to Hector
