Meet Your Neighbour

may-grigg-neighbour

This week meet May Grigg, long time resident of Kamloops and quilter extraordinaire!

May was born in Vancouver, moving to  a town called Jubille in the Fraser Valley as a young girl. After graduation May went to work at the Teddy Bear Coffee shop for Tom and Sunny Irvin as  a waitress.

It was there that she met the love of her life, John who was driving truck. They were married at the coast but when John's work transferred him up to Kamloops they packed up and here they have been since 1951. John was the agent for Imperial Oil and May was his helper with bookkeeping and errand running, at the same time as raising her children.

Her neighbour Helen Olsen started her sewing garments when the kids were still little. One time she made a pair of jogging pants but instead of joining the fronts together at the front seam, she joined them down the side pant leg. The crotch then winged out to the sides and she had a very confusing pair of pants. Luckily Helen got her sorted out and on her way.

May then went on to make everything from shirts, pajamas, tops to wedding gowns! Eventually she had had enough of the garment sewing and decided to give quilting a try. It was Marilyn Kiehlbauch who mentored her from the start with advice and helped her to learn her favourite part of quilting----the applique.

She met up with Gerry Buchanan who invited her to join the River Valley Quilters Guild. May has been a member for 25 years now!

Every year May pieces and appliques a queen size quilt to be raffled off at a Seniors Center in the Fraser Valley where her sister resided. I have a picture of the quilt below. May did the piecing and the applique and Judy Anderson has done the long arm quilting.

May still lives on her own [in her late 80s] with her little dog. You may have seen her driving around in her big brown pick up headed down to our shop for a visit and to see if there are any fat quarters she will need for the next project!

May....You are an amazing woman and we are all in awe of your energy, your skills and your ability to live each day to the most! May we all be as amazing as you!

Margaret Mitchell was in to long arm quilt this lovely black, white, grey and aqua quilt. It is hard to see from the photo but the fabrics worked beautifully and the panto called Seamless worked perfect!

I have to admit I was bit twitchy when she said she was coming to do 2 quilts....hmmmmmm. Guess what? She aced it! Margaret was in and out easy and we had time for photos!

Little side note: Notice her shoes if you can...from Kennels downtown Kamloops and they are stunning. I shall be investigating.

Thank you Margaret for sharing your energy and inspiring us all! Now check out the Harry Potter quilt she did the same day! Lori Dewart was her helper so Margaret asked for her to be in the picture as well. Great work both of you!

Wendy Wilson, with help from Lori, long arm quilted this stunning bed quilt. Wendy started with the turtles as the center and built her quilt from there.

She then decided on the Flirtatious Panto and said she was okay to panto everywhere but the turtles. That she wanted to have treated on its own. Between the two of them they figured it out and made it work.Does it not look amazing?

Thank you to Wendy for having such a fun day with us!

Teddy's Great Adventure

teddys-great-adventure-free-pattern-image

Just in to the shop, Teddy's Great Adventure is  a must have for every fabric hoarding situation. LOL

I love this collection with it's small prints of airplanes, helicopters, ships, dots and more! A vintage feel to the fabrics and a great pattern to use to create that little boy quilt.
