Heather is back and rarin' to go!

I am back from my retreat on a quilt cruise to Hawaii and am ready to go! I had a marvellous time with lifelong memories and friendships made.
While in Hawaii I had opportunity to visit several quilt shops which was just the best fun ever!! All of the shops were fabulous that we went to but I had 2 that were my hands down favourites.
First was the Maui Quilt shop( shown in the photo) in Wailuku which was a tiny shop with every available inch used for product and samples. The staff was so welcoming and knowledgeable. Elyn Worrall a highly skilled Hawaiian quilter was giving demos on the technique with samples to show and clear instructions. She is so passionate about what she does and is an incredible instructor. I may even be able to have her come to give a class at my shop!!! Peel me off the ceiling at this point!!!!! We all went out with kits and more product! I haven't sewn any of it yet as I am still in the stage of petting it and welcoming it to my sewing space. Check out their website: http://www.mauiquiltshop
The other one I do want to tell you about is the Kapaia Stitchery in Lihue, Kauai. The shop is so quaint and lovely! Porch that goes across the entire front of the shop with seating for all. Inside is full of Hawaiian fabrics and handmade items. The vibrancy of the fabrics is incredible! Super friendly staff, lots of variety and yes I may have squished some more into my suitcase. For all the news and sales you need to find them on Facebook www.facebook.com/kapaiastitchery They do have a website but it is more for information and samples. Photo below of the inside of the shop.

Danielle Mader

Danielle Mader was in to longarm quilt her gorgeous Vintage floral quilt. The fabrics are from her mom's clothing that she had made years ago when Danielle was growing up. Sadly her mom has passed and Danielle's goal is to make a quilt for her family using these fabrics.
Pattern is Hunter's Star with a fantastic balance of values in her fabrics. When doing scrap quilts you want to move your tones of fabrics throughout the quilt, so you don't end up with too much of one colour in one place. Danielle did a great job of it!
Thank you to Danielle for sharing with everyone!

Nicole Gendy

Nicole did a fabulous modern look to a traditional pattern and did it ever turn out gorgeous! Her colours are fantastic and the piecing is lovely!
By changing out the background to a dark and the star pieces to lights she has completely swapped the traditional look. What a beautiful fresh look she has created. All done in scraps which apparently did not make a dent in her stash! It is okay Nicole......we certainly would never judge! LOL
Thank you to Nicole for sharing with us all!

Weekly Quilting Tip

This week's quilting tip comes from myself in regards to prepping your quilt for longarming. If you have a quilt with no borders or pieced borders it is hugely helpful if you can stitch all around the quilt 1/8" to 1/4". This helps the quilt to stay in place and not stretch or split apart as it is stretched on the frame.
I just use a regular stitch length of 2.5 on my machine to lock everything in place. Even on straight pieces of border it can help with fraying and stretching. For the few minutes it takes to do this final step I think you will find it to be a much better finished product.
Remember to send your tips in to us to put on the newletter and help everyone out there. Send them into my email address info@fabricshelf.ca

Mister - Friends

A large notion order came in while I was away visiting quilt shops and basking in hot tubs. Included in the order is these super fun Mister spray bottles.
This bottle can be used with liquid starch sprays i.e. Best Press, Flatter, etc., as well as water. Get better coverage with your starch.Continuous spray, repeated actuation produces an endless spray, allowing large areas to be covered quickly and easily. 360 degree spraying options allows all areas to be reached. Less hand fatigue compared to standard trigger and finger tip sprayers. These bottles hold 300ml (about 10oz)
Find them in the shop or on the website: https://fabricshelf.rainadmin.com/shop/c/p/MISTER---FRIENDS-x62947182.htm.

The free pattern this week comes from Riley Blake Fabrics and is suitable for a planned look or dive into your stashes and make it a fun project using your leftovers.
The spools quilt is a traditional pattern but when you use newer fabrics it takes on a fresh modern look! Finishing at 76" x 88" this is a large throw or twin size. Easy enough to make it any size you like, just add or take away some of the blocks.

Scissor Sharpening

We have discovered a fellow in town, Rick Walker, a fully certified, scissor sharpener who will come and sharpen your scissors here at the shop. Rick comes with 40 years of experience and does a great job! He will even sharpen pinking shears, grooming shears and more.
Drop your scissors off at the shop and as soon as we have enough to make it worthwhile we will have him come out. I would think 4 - 5 pairs should be good. You can also just give us a call at 250-376-7630 and let us know you are interested so you aren't without your scissors for any length of time.
Cost is $10 a pair.
Just a side note from us: He sharpened our batting scissors and did amazing! They are like brand new scissors!
