Meet Your Neighbour

joni newman 1

This week meet Joni Newman, a quilting celebrity who has recently relocated to Kamloops! You can use her name in conversations if you like....I am sure she will be okay with all of that!

Joni was born in Ottawa, attended school in Ottawa, and lived all of her life in Ontario until now. Actually her parents grew up in Ottawa, married, moved 6 blocks from where they grew up and then moved another 6 blocks when Joni and her siblings came along. Her parents lived in the second place all their married life until moving into a retirement home! Times have sure changed!

To get back on track....Joni attended Carlton University upon finishing High School. She started with Geology but ended up getting her degree in Business Marketing. Her career was always in sales....from Banking to Chemical Storage and loads in between.

Joni had started sewing in Grade School and loved it. She was a garment sewer and was sewing for everyone. The more she could change a pattern or embellish them the better. This evolved into Joni sewing part time, teaching on weekends and attending guild events.

In 2010 she was seriously injured and was unable to go back to her job in sales. Lucky for us, she then began quilting full time, working on her drawings and creating gorgeous quilts. She contacted Nothcott Fabrics and showed them what she was doing. Northcott promptly hired her as a designer and the rest is history!

The Stained Glass look is one of her personal favourites, but she has a large repertoire of techniques and projects. Her patterns are available at our shop and on line at http://www.fabricshelf.ca

Don't forget to sign up for the Trunk Show at 2 pm on Friday Sept. 20 and Sunday Sept. 22 at 11pm. Classes in October are full and more will be posted shortly.

You can also check out more of her designs at her website: https://www.quirksandquilts.com/

Wendy Wilson

  wendy-wilson

Wendy Wilson was in to get her certification on our APQS Millie machine. The project she chose to quilt was a great choice as it had lots of reference line to work with.

Bill was so surprised at how quickly Wendy picked up the process! I could tell from my office how smooth the machine was running and was thrilled for her!

Thank you to Wendy for spending your day with us!

Laura Napier

laura-napier-baby-quilt-bright

Laura Napier was in to long arm quilt not 1, not 2 BUT 3 quilts in one day!!!
Laura is becoming very comfortable on the long arm and can really plow through them with awesome results!

The first up is a traditional quilt with updated fabrics. The second quilt you see is a Jelly Roll Race quilt in some of my favourite colors. The third one is going to a little girl's all time favourite as it is all unicorns and stars.

Laura, I love the way you always put so much into the quilt. You really work hard to make each project appropriate to the receiver!

Thank you to Laura for sharing with us all!

  marcia-and-earl-skaarup

Take a look at this gorgeous quilt by the talented Marcia Skaarup! I love a traditional quilt and her colours are just perfect!

Marcia and her hubby, Earl, came in to long arm quilt this beauty. Earl is getting to be quite the helper on the long arm. I think Bill can feel him nipping at his heels. LOL

Thank you so much you two for coming in and sharing with us all!

Tanja Walker

tanja-walker-brown-batiks

Tanja Walker was in to long arm quilt her gorgeous earth toned batik quilt. I love the pattern and her placement of colours was spot on!

We don't see a lot of quilts come in that are one colour, so this one was a bit special for us. She just nailed it on her use of values in the colours.

Thank you Tanja for inspiring us all!

Paulette Eccleston

  paulette-eccleston-hexagon

Paulette was in to long arm her gorgeous table center or wall hanging. We don't see a lot of hexagon shaped quilts come in so it is always interesting to see how they will quilt up under the long arm.

Paulette did great and the project lays nice and flat. I am wondering when she is going to deplete her fabric stash? Hmmmmmm

The second photo is a baby quilt she quilted up and it is just so darn cute! Super quick and easy and nice to have on hand! Are you at least running a bit low on fabric Paulette?????

Thank you Paulette for guilt tripping me into using some of my stash.....LOL
